As a colonial relic hunter it is not uncommon to find watch winders. In fact, I would estimate that in the past I have found a dozen winders at the very site that I made this find. All the previously dug winders were made of brass, although some were gold plated at one time. On the last outing of 2012 I was lucky enough to dig this beautiful early to mid 1800's solid gold watch winder key, a rare find for any colonial digger! The winder tested around 17 karat, unusual in modern jewelry but common 200 years ago. At one time there was likely to be a glass insert in the middle of the winder but now it's long gone! It measures 35 mm long and weighs just shy of 2 grams.
